Local Attractions
Recreation around Powers Lake includes a number of small lakes and reservoirs that are used for fishing and boating. These include Powers Lake and Smishek Lake; Northgate Dam by Bowbells; Short Creek Dam by Columbus, McGregor Dam by McGregor, and White Earth Dam located in the White Earth Valley. These waters contain northern pike, walleye, trout, perch, crappie. Ice fishing as soon as the ice is thick enough is very popular.
Powers Lake is one of the best areas for hunting birds like the ring necked pheasants, partridge, and grouse. Geese and ducks are also in abundance here, with our area having some some of the best hunting in North Dakota. Wildlife in the area include whitetail deer, coyote, fox, raccoon, beaver, rabbits, and an occasional moose.
The Lostwood National Refuge is located about ten miles east of Powers Lake and the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge is located in northeast Burke County. Bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts will find unique opportunities to observe and photograph native birds and animals in their natural surroundings.
Powers Lake has two city parks with basketball courts, one with a tennis court. There are two public campgrounds with electricity. The campgrounds over look the lake. Come enjoy the blue skies, long summer days, and some of the most beautiful sunsets seen anywhere.
Another variety of recreation is golf, also enjoyed through out the area. Powers Lake, Bowbells, Columbus, Portal, and Stanley, all have golf courses which sponsor tournaments. For a day of fun you can golf at a couple of courses and still be back home before the sun sets.
